You’ve heard all the buzz words “deep breathing/breath work, meditation, mindfulness, physical activity/excercise, yoga, reiki, tai chi, healthy diet, sleep, tine in nature, retreats, acupuncture, massage, gratitude journaling, therapy, EMDR”, but what does that actually mean or do for you in you real day-to-day life?
Well or unwell – how to find balance and what works in an industry that has predatory elements
Beating ourselves into wellness, being hard on ourselves, is counter-productive and can cause additional stress when you are looking to reduce stress.
Wellness can be great, it can also be an addiction/obsession in its extreme. While better than most addictions, if it drains your life force rather than replenishes it, that is a problem. Any extreme is not good for us. There are people who are obsessed with wellness, while others think it is total bullshit, neither extreme is of benefit, as it usually goes with extremes. It’s not about how much kale you eat or how long you meditate, but whether it replenishes your life force or drains it. Are you happy, do you have energy, good energy? Are you caring for yourself with love and respect or are you bullying yourself and pushing too hard . Are you shamed into wellness, or do you genuinely want to nourish your body and soul. The wellness industry is a multi-trillion-dollar enterprise that thrives on the paradox of promising health, yet often delivering anxiety and financial strain. Born out of a genuine desire to help, has morphed into an endless cycle of consumption that can stress you out more than it helps. The compulsive pursuit of an ever-receding finish line can lead to anxiety and stress. Ask yourself what your goals are? Are you genuinely looking to de-stress, or are you for the perfect body or dealing with fear of aging?
It comes down to balance, like most things in life. Many wellness companies offer genuine and very useful help and advice. Pay attention to your heart and your body. Is their product or service nourishing or draining you. And many things are free, the ones you pay for should be about teaching you to fish not about selling you fish.
